opens the case, with whatever motives in mind. Dance tunes the viola
with Lucas’s help, and then he starts playing. I’m not sur how they
get lucas out of the room (whether alarmed or not also) and as Dance
plays the missing Locatelli piece, things start happening to him. He
hasn’t grown out the classic cobra hood associated with nagas yet. If
you imagine that with the slidecoat properties, you can see where
connecting him to a resource like Emma could make him an extremely
powerful weapon. The hood could shape itself like an antenna.
greenjudy and i were speculating whether this is a separate piece of
equipment–the viola is a slidecoat thing deceptively hiding as an
instrument in itself–or if the *cleaning* cloth on the chin rest that
really does it, and the viola’s music activates it all. The hood’s
structure is implicit in Danc’s cervical-upper rib structure, it just
never grew out properly. However, if the viola is improperly tuned
(modern style) it won’t work right, and the results are dangerous.
That’s bad enough. But Turner has set it up even more than that.
In addition, to let it grow out properly, the naga has to be shut
down. This is tough, given that Dance has just been playing the
instrument. There’s a shut-off switch, of course–and Drin actually
knows where it is is, in months of touching Dance. He’s never tampered
with it–not at first knowing what it was, and then not knowing how to
switch him back on. He’s afraid that Dance will lose respitation and
heart beat and all, his memories are of things on total life support.
But there’s a problem. When they tried to put Dance away in the
Sarcobox, they mishandled him, he fought back, at least twice, he’s the
tiger that never gets properly sedated. You can’t turn him off without
a violent conditioned response now, he’ll kill you. And of course
Turner got reports, he knows this. He doesn’t need to do anything to
make Dance a lethal bomb waiting to happen. All he needs to do is make
sure Pen tells Drin to turn him off. The moment Pen does that, it’s a
trainwreck waiting to happen. Now, there’s a couple of things that
could fail in Turner’s plans. But he only needs it to go right once.
The things that could alter it is that nobody ever thought tuning the
viola to its original source, the meantone tuning it was designed for,
and this changes the way that Dance’s body rings with those harmonics
(similar to Pen’s bone conduction) and also that even if they don’t
succeed in turning Dance off, he can choose not to attack them, and he
can dive out into the storm to *cool off* in the wind/rain. He goes
through it conscious, where previous creatures of this artificial sort
were always sedated to let the neurons and tissues finish growing out.
I suspect, in addition, that he also repairs and grows his zero-g
tail-carrying box back.-Heather Gladney 9/21/08 9:18 PM
Woot! -Numaari 9/22/08 10:10 AM Question
– would Lucas have to leave? It’s mentioned later that he does go back
up, with some sort of box -Numaari 9/22/08 10:12 AM
I’m
thinking that Emberely might use something like that to get Lucas out
of the room safely. Lucas might be the one who thinks of things to
bring back? Now I’m not sure what they’d be, either. -Heather Gladney

  1. Yesssss, it works!

Unless i can force “Input format” to “full html” we have to open that link, just under the text box, and set it from “filtered”, so that we can get the colored streamers…
