Where’s My Compass?

So we finally have the viola. I’m stoked!

But, of course, this leads to a question. Where are we going from here? Are Dia and Lucas incidental characters, left behind when The Trio leave Pen’s? Where are Kiya’s former characters X and Y in all this? Is Hal staying behind? Will we ever get to meet Simon and learn more about Goethe?

Where the hell are The Trio going after they leave Pen’s?

Just some thinkin’ I’m doing before I go to work and have my brains sucked out my nose by the corporate machine…

  1. Wren and Jian, once they get past having sex in a closet as a hurricane blows toward everyone, and then hunkering down somewhere for the duration of said hurricane, are going to be both very disoriented (time shift, it’s a wonderful thing) and also very firm in what their stance on certain things is (they are going to support- and possibly follow, if things move around – Dance, Drin, Emma, and Emberley [because Dance saved Wren’s life, in Jian’s eyes, and because Wren knows of Emberley from Darryl]; they are firmly against the bugs and their ilk [because of their own knowledge of what said ilk become, and the war that ensues/ensued, depending on what point in time you’re looking at it from]; they are probably going to want to protect Callie, or something along those lines, for reasons ranging from “she’s a little girl, she shouldn’t be involved in all this” to “mudang are holy, asswipe”). Neither of them are musical, beyond having a vague appreciation for it – Wren has vast knowledge of musical stuff, packed into her brain, but so does Emma, and unlike Wren, the War Librarian has some idea already what is going on/needed there, so that’s not an area where they’re likely to be able to contribute.

Simply put, Wren and Jian are likely going to be in a reactionary state of mind/action until they start to get their bearings, and then they’ll start thinking beyond the immediate future. We start to see the beginnings of this, in Wren wanting to go get things from the Chevy. I’m not sure where Jian is, at that point – I’m not sure he’s told Wren, yet, about the time shift they’ve experienced (he’s still coming to grips with it).

Basically, if you put something in front of them that’s not friendly, they’ll shoot it, but beyond that we’re still working things out.

  2. You’re right, I suspect that Dia and Lucas are going to be sticking with Hal for a very long time. If the Trio move on, it’s possible that they might accompany them before returning to the swamp. After all, I wrote Dia to become a character in this story, so I would want her to help. Besides, I would like them to get to know the Trio better – they’re cool people. It would be nice to be able to help them make their transformations into whatever people they’re going to become. There’s no going back now — at least, I don’t think so.

    Anyway, I’m rambling.

But I’m most happy with Dia’s role as Swamp Princess. Perhaps their relationship won’t be the most conventional, but together they can do great things.

I hope we continue to discuss this. I’m having a great time nattering with you guys!

  3. Yeah, I wanna know more about Steve too. Numaari saw Haroldine and Steve and Penelope sitting over some weird tea. Now, *that’s* promising.
I likes me some Wyrd Sisters brewing up bidness.

  4. Damn good questions.

One of the fun and kooky things to me about POM is that actually, there are NO ancillary characters. EVERY character could potentially get developed in this crazy horizontal architecture. (Steve, for example! Wanna know more about Steve…) If we were publishing a paper book, that would not be practical or even advisable.

There is, however, a line of action happening, right? Dance is transfiguring into a Naga. Emma is recovering her memories as a War Librarian. Drin has yet to let loose his grip on all his secrets. Pen is part of Turner’s assassination attempt; but presuming this fails, and Drin survives, Turner isn’t done. Not by a long shot.

Where the Baroque Trio go after Dance gets through his transform is a good question. The Swamp is a good redoubt, a good place to bivouac and perhaps the right place to take a stand. We’ll have to see what NV is hearing in the trendlines of this.

Most of the characters I’ve brought in are working on this stuff remotely, like Salley in Vancouver, and Edward actively tracking Turner. Their parts of this story can be told in interleaved sections to add a little additional body and information to the main story.

Sounds to me like Dia and Lucas’s role will at least partially be dependent on what happens with Hal Two Horses. And this is just gut instinct–it may have something to do with Drin, decisions he has to make, responsibilities he has to distribute.

I’d like to hear discussion and feedback from Kiya about Wren and Jian, too. I’d like to see them wrapped more firmly into the yarn ball of action, or, um, spun more firmly into the yarn we are making out of the vast roving that is POM…um… @_@
